Mark Churchill is an Ojai-based ceramicist with over three decades of experience working in stoneware and porcelain. Mark began his exploration with clay at a young age and became an apprentice of master potter, Frank Massarella at age sixteen.  Long inspired by traditional Japanese craftsmanship, with influences ranging from Lucie Rie to Shoji Hamada, his work centers on hand-thrown, functional forms that balance utility with artistry. Each firing yields subtle variations, with shifts in tone and surface embraced as an inherent part of the process.

Churchill sources clay and glaze materials locally, incorporating elements such as red clay and ash from oak and pine. His work is fired in a historic gas kiln once owned by Otto Heino, where high temperatures and atmospheric conditions shape the final surface. In addition to dinnerware and vessels, Churchill collaborates with designers to develop custom pieces.
